How To Feel Less Anxious With A Matcha Meditation
By Jenay Zhyrov
Your time is limited in the morning, and anxiety is buzzing in your chest. Today there isn’t enough space in your schedule to follow a long guided meditation. Instead, try a quick matcha breathwork session to soothe those nerves before you step into the rest of your day.
Incorporating quick and delightful moments of calm in seemingly mundane activities can fit effortlessly into your daily routines. One of our favorite meditative moments happens while whisking matcha powder with warm water for a morning latte. Adding an element of deep breathing has turned this simple task into a mindful ritual that offers a chance to alleviate some lingering anxiety.
Matcha’s Zen Roots & Benefits
There’s a reason matcha and meditation blend well together. It has spiritual roots. Although green tea and its powdered form, matcha, originated in China around the 8th century, it became popularized by the zen Buddhism community in Japan during the 12th century.
Uji, Japan is the birthplace of high-quality matcha leaves and continues to be a highly respected region to source matcha. It’s where we source ours to ensure you’re consuming the best of the best.
Research has shown that matcha is high in caffeine without the jitters or a crash. Instead, it enhances concentration. This powerful form of green tea is also abundant with antioxidants, and while more research is needed, some studies have shown it can help support the immune system.
Matcha’s place in modern society knows no bounds, and it continues to evolve as a staple drink for kickstarting a work day, a social hang, or a leisure activity. Today we’re focusing on the solitary practice of making matcha at home.
Here are seven simple steps for a matcha breathwork session:
Step 1: Heat 1 - 2 oz of water and 8 oz of your milk of choice.
Step 2: Add 1 tsp of our ceremonial-grade matcha into a small bowl or cup.
Step 3: Slowly pour in warm water and if you prefer a little sweetness, add some honey for your desired taste.
Step 4: Now for the breathwork meditation. Set a timer for 30 - 45 seconds, and use a bamboo whisk to blend the matcha mixture in “Z” patterns to loosen any clumps while you take slow deep breaths. Slowly count to 4 while you inhale, and exhale back down to 1 while you watch your matcha get deliciously frothy.
Step 5: Take a moment to appreciate the stillness.
Step 6: Pour your matcha mixture into your favorite mug or glass and add your milk of choice (heated or frothed).
Step 7: Enjoy your latte, a focused boost of energy, and a sense of renewed calm.
If you prefer to enjoy your latte chilled, pour the matcha over ice and add milk straight from the fridge.
To get started with your new meditation practice, grab a tin of our matcha or shop our collection of loose-leaf teas. No bamboo whisk or handheld frother? We have the perfect one for you.
