Website Copy for a Wellness Podcast

The Client: Balanced Black Girl

An online platform and podcast dedicated to helping Black women feel their best.

The Deliverable:
❋ Website Copy

The Challenge

When Les Alfred, founder and host of Balanced Black Girl, reached out to me, her podcast had already hit millions of downloads and earned over 1,000 five-star reviews. She was preparing to grow into a new era of success—but was on the cusp of burnout. Trying to write her website copy herself left her feeling drained and stuck.

Les told me she didn’t connect with her original copy anymore. It felt too focused on her as a solo content creator and didn’t match her vision for BBG as a growing media brand. More than anything, she wanted the website to feel like the space she envisioned for her audience—like hanging out with friends, not weighed down by the heaviness often found on similar platforms for Black and brown women.

My Approach

This project looked a little different from how I typically work with clients. By the time I was brought on, the website was mostly designed, so I didn’t have a hand in shaping the initial content outline or wireframe.

But I’m flexible! I was excited to collaborate with The Brand Doula, a talented brand development studio, and trusted the thoughtful direction they’d already mapped for us.

  • Before working with Les, I’d been a loyal listener of her pod for years, so her voice and the topics she explored already felt familiar. Still, her responses to my Brand Clarity Worksheet and BBG’s new brand style guide educated me on its elevated direction, the zillennial and millennial women it serves, and its growing content ecosystem.

To deepen the research, I revisited podcast episodes, scrolled through social media posts and comment sections, and even dropped into BBG’s Geneva chat rooms to see what the community was talking about. Immersing myself in their world helped me adapt the language and connect the copy with their desires.

  • With The Brand Doula’s wireframe and website mockup as my guide, I crafted the copy for five key pages: Home, About, Podcast, Blog, and Newsletter.

Balanced Black Girl is all about setting trends, not following them. The new copy avoids overused phrases like 'soft life' or 'Black girl luxury,' instead offering a modern yet timeless feel. It’s welcoming, conversational, and just airy enough to evoke a sense of lightness.

The messaging emphasizes community and limitless possibility, using friendly, inclusive, and supportive language. It captures the spirit of communal support, sharing circles, yoga stretches, holistic wellness, and, of course, joy.

“Oh my goodness, I’m in tears—the website copy is wonderful!”

“Jenay knocked it out of the park. The About page is such a beautiful description of what Balanced Black Girl is all about. I love how relaxed and inviting all of the language is—it's perfect. She captured the brand voice beautifully and created fantastic copy that was exactly what I was looking for. The entire process was seamless from onboarding to delivery. I appreciated that I knew the work would be completed on-time and would be high quality. I am very happy with the final result.”
