The Challenge

Kim and Kayla Hill, sisters and co-founders of Tōme Candles, were gearing up to launch a line of candles designed to help book lovers elevate their reading rituals. While juggling full-time jobs, collaborating with a renowned perfumer, and hand-pouring candles in Los Angeles, they realized they needed help crafting product descriptions and a founders' blurb for their online shop’s debut. They approached me to bring their vision to life with words that would capture the cozy magic of their brand.

My Approach

As someone who devours around 50 books a year and keeps candles burning at home, this project was a natural fit. The Hill sisters had already partnered with Launch+Co to establish their brand strategy, key messaging, and visual identity. I stepped in to write product descriptions for four candle scents that would launch their collection.

Focusing on their target audience of book lovers and home decor enthusiasts, I crafted descriptions inspired by literary tropes and stories, setting a vivid scene for each scent.

  • To immerse myself in the Tōme Candles world, I started with a product sheet filled out by Kim and Kayla. They shared everything from each candle’s scent notes and ingredients to the literary works that inspired them.

As an avid reader, I already had a grasp of the genres and themes they referenced, but I took it a step further by researching the specific books they mentioned to ensure I nailed the tone and atmosphere.

I also studied the details of the fragrance profiles and lighted mini samples while I wrote. This sensory process helped me create descriptions that felt grounded in the scents but layered with literary magic.

  • I wrote storytelling-driven product descriptions to transport readers into the worlds of the scents. Each description became a literary experience, combining lush imagery, familiar tropes, and an emotional connection to the fragrance.

The language was intentionally poetic yet approachable, ensuring that the scents felt luxurious, personal, and aligned with Tōme’s storytelling roots.

“Jenay has a gift, and it was an honor to work with her.”

“We love the product descriptions! Jenay captured the essence of each scent and our inspiration from books. And for our founder bio, she took our words and turned them into something coherent.”
